Retail staring at a one lakh crore in losses!

Considering retail investors held ~19.2% of stocks in India outside of Top 500 and the market cap fall in that category has been ~$45bn in CY25, we are saying that retail investors have seen loss of ~$9bn in CY25 thanks to their over-ownership in smaller stocks.

Now, direct ownership of Small and Midcap stocks is not the only place retail investor is losing money. Retail investors have ~25% of their total MF portfolio is small and midcap schemes! As of Dec end, the worst of their SMID MF Scheme investment was ~$50bn…assuming on an average 7% loss in this, retail would have lost ~$3.5bn in investments even via MF schemes invested in small and midcap stocks.
