Key to luxury- keep them waiting!

Ferrari’s ability to price their cars way above cost of production even vs. other luxury car brands is unique. The answer perhaps lies in the statement below.

“During Q2 2023 earnings call, the CEO gave an intriguing response to the question of how many cars Ferrari plans to produce:

"I understand there is a lot of curiosity on these numbers. What I can tell you is that we will always sell one car less than the market demand."

A comparison of the left- and right-hand sides of Figure 2 shows that countries had widely differing fortunes over the intervening 124 years. This raises two important questions. The first relates to survivorship bias. Investors in some countries were lucky, but others suffered financial disaster or very poor returns. The other is success bias, organized trading in marketable securities began in Amsterdam in 1602 and London in 1698 but did not commence in New York until 1792. It is dangerous to generalize from US asset returns since they exhibit “success bias.”

The rent ‘WAS’ too damn high!

“US Asking Rents were down 0.8% over the last year, the 10th consecutive YoY decline. Shelter CPI has now moved down on a YoY basis for 11 straight months, from a peak of 8.2% in March 2023 (highest since 1982) to 5.7% today. Given its long lag vs. real-time rent data, a continued move lower is expected which should lead to a continued decline in core inflation.”
